This is a surprising image that I took while eating dinner out at a restaurant last weekend down on College St. in Toronto. I call is surprising because, while I was planning for certain elements, I didn’t count on the level of layers that the final image presented.
My original intention was a very simple, long exposure that would capture the cars’ lights as they passed by on the street. I had also planned to include the light from the lamp post to ground the image and was only hoping for enough residual light to provide some detail to the background store fronts to define the street scene. The surprise for me was how well lit the background ended up being and the additional reflections from the window that I was shooting through that provided some awesome fill images in the shadowy areas of the original composition.
The resulting image included 4 layers of visual elements that add much more depth to the photo than I had originally planned. Sometimes you can count on a little bit of luck to be on your side when you initially take the time to think through a shot.

I know this post is late considering that our trip was back in the early part of November but I need to catch up with all the events over the last few weeks and thought that the Vegas trip was a good place to start.
I’m not going to get into the details of the trip because, as you know, ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’; however, I can show you the slideshow of photos that I took.

Buskerfest is a remarkable, 4 day event that takes place in St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood of Downtown Toronto each year featuring performers and entertainers from around the world. The entertainers are an eclectic mix of street performers, artists, musicians and all-round weirdos who ply their talents for your tips. All of the shows are performed for free and at the end of the act the entertainer passes their hat and you decide the value of the show by donating what you think it was worth.
